ARM'S CONTRIBUTION IN THE SECTOR OF HEALTH

ARM Burundi has health care structures consisting of the Cliniques Médico-chrétienne de Rohero and Jabe in Bujumbura (CMCC – Jabe/Rohero), which started operating in 1995 and 1996 respectively. It should be mentioned that both clinics had started their activities informally since 1993 during the civil war.  These health facilities, which are the first ARM projects, were a response to the war-wounded populations of 1993 who needed relief. The services offered by these structures have gradually expanded.

specialises in general surgery. Its initial mission was to care for war wounded in 1993 and to this day it welcomes patients requiring surgical procedures, but it has extended its services to other specialities. It has a hospitalization capacity of 48 beds with a reanimation room. Its technical services are mainly Pharmacy, 2 Operating Rooms, Nursing, Anaesthesia, and Radiography. It also includes Administrative and Accounting Services, Cleaning and Security. These services function properly and it supports financially the operating costs of the National Office of ARM Burundi and the payment of the salaries of its staff.

Located in Bujumbura in the JABE district, this clinic has been officially operational since 1996 and takes care of people from the poor districts of Bujumbura, including Buyenzi, Bwiza, Jabe and Nyakabiga. The operational services are : Reception, Laboratory, Pharmacy, Minor surgery, Nursing, Radiography, Administration, Accounting, Cleanning. The buildings that host this clinic do not belong to the clinic itself. They are located on the plot of the Living Church of Jabe(Eglise Vivante). However, given the historical and spiritual links between the two bodies, this situation does not require ARM Burundi to provide any rent. There is an unwritten agreement between Eglise Vivante and ARM to exploit the plot for an indefinite period of time.

Although this clinic succeeds in operating as best it can with its meagre financial resources, monthly income often does not cover the expenses indispensable for its day-to-day running. This clinic still needs the help of financial partners to continue to serve the poor people of the areas where it operates.

Located in a rural area in the province of Gitega in the Commune of Rutegama, it has been operational since June 2010 and provides preventive and curative health care services to the rural population of the Commune of Rutegama zone. Its main activities include: consultation, maternity, family planning, vaccination, hospitalisation, a laboratory and pharmacy. It operates with its own funds generated in the different activities and PBF (Performance Based Financing) funds from various donors such as the World Bank PBF, the European Union, GAVI. As the CMCC-JABE, the monthly income is insufficient to cover the expenses and running costs. It still needs financial partners.

This project has been  initiated by ARM-Burundi in 1998. It works in Bujumbura, Ngozi and Gitega. This project provides medical and psychosocial care for 1164 people living with HIV/AIDS, including 165 orphans. Since 2008, ACVS has been financed with medical equipment and drugs by the “Solidarité Protestantes de Belgique”. This funding ended in December 2016. The management of ARM-Burundi did not have the audacity to leave the beneficiaries to their fate, and so the project remained functional. It should be noted that the beneficiaries, the staff, as well as the rent of the care centre for people living with HIV in Ngozi are temporarily supported by the two clinics JABE and ROHERO. ARM Burundi has been able to purchase a plot of land for the construction of its own centre if funds are available to reduce operating costs while paying rent. ARM Burundi is looking for a donor to build its own centre in Ngozi on the plot of land already purchased.
